's. there has been a loss here in the senate. the senator from the hawaii, daniel inouye at 88 years old passed away yesterday. that will likely cause interruption for a few days for memorial services next couple weeks. whether for the president and most members of congress to go to hawaii or for the late senator to lie in state at the capitol, all things would cut up more time, meaning in all likelihood, if they find an agreement that could be considered real they would have to give themselves a little bit of overtime and pass one of the legislative vehicles that essentially stops the clock to take it into new year's. that was not the plan. that is why they put together what was called sequester so they would be forced to put a legislative gun to their heads to make a deal. looks like they may give themselves a little bit of after school study time. bill: we'll see how that pays off. carl cameron leading our coverage. thank you, sir. martha: the bottom line really does this deal begin to address the economic problems that exist in this country? stuart varney, the anchor of "varney & company" o

left for his vacation in hawaii on friday evening, talked about a very pared down, stripped down plan. simply extend the bush tax cuts for people making $250,000 or less, extend unemployment benefits for 2 million people that they're going to run out for, and basically postpone all of the sequester, which would be 110 billion dollars in spending cuts in 2013. now, i'm just not sure i see how republicans are going to go along with that given the fact that you just had the plan b rejected which was going to set the marker not at 250,000, but a million and the speaker couldn't get the votes for that, so, why would republicans now go for the $250,000 that we've been rejecting all along. >> clayton: another animal house reference, it's like the young members of congress trying to get their pledge pin, you know, who are going along trying to vote for this. and they're not-- i mean, let's be honest, this is the reason they didn't get the votes, the 40 or 50 members who didn't want to go along with the speaker on this. you're right, chris. i mean, let's dive into that. how are they going to p
over the cliff. >> mike, what happens to the president's plans? he usually goes to hawaii for christmas and new year's. he'd have to stay in washington. >> i don't know that. because the president's not going to want to look like he's a captive of washington. he did stay here once before and then extended his vacation. that was part of why i've been predicting december 23rd. but these stages of grief by both sides are just going slower than they expected. they're doing the dance, but it's just so slow. so i think it's possible that nothing happens next week, that next week we get a real proposal from either side. but they're not making -- we've been talking about this for months and months. but the guys in the actual room have only been doing this for a couple days. and they're not ready to concede yet. they're still at their sort of starting gate positions. >> mike, is there any sort of quiet blue dog action on this on either the right or the left, more moderate members who are talking maybe offline who may step into the breach if there is one? >> there's a little bit, and there's cert
